First Supplementary Voters’ List Released in West Bengal
After Adjudication of 29 Lakh Cases
The Election Commission has published the first
supplementary voters’ list for West Bengal under the Special Intensive Revision
(SIR) 2026, marking a significant step toward finalizing an accurate electoral
roll ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The list was released late on
the night of March 23, around 11:55 PM, following the adjudication of
approximately 29 lakh cases that were previously marked as “under
adjudication.” The move comes after the publication of the final electoral roll
on February 28, 2026, which had left nearly 60 lakh voter entries pending
verification. According to officials, the adjudication process was carried out
by a total of 705 judicial officers tasked with reviewing claims, objections,
and discrepancies in the voter database.
The Special Intensive Revision was undertaken in compliance with
directives from the Supreme Court, aimed at ensuring a clean, transparent, and
error-free electoral roll before the state heads into polls. The exercise
involved extensive scrutiny of voter records to address duplication,
inaccuracies, and eligibility concerns. With the release of the supplementary
list, voters can now verify their inclusion status through the Chief Electoral
Officer (CEO) West Bengal’s official website or via the ECI Net mobile
application. Authorities have also established 19 appeal tribunals across the
state, providing an avenue for individuals whose names may have been excluded
to seek redress.
In view of
potential public response following the publication, the state administration
has heightened security measures. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal
has issued directives to District Magistrates and Police Commissioners to
ensure effective crowd management and maintain law and order at voter
facilitation centers.
West Bengal is scheduled to conduct polling for its
294-member Legislative Assembly in two phases on April 23 and April 29, 2026.
The counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026.Officials reiterated that
the revision process is part of a broader effort to uphold the integrity of the
electoral system and to facilitate a fair and inclusive democratic exercise in
the state.
